The House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday released a report summarizing its impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. The 300-page report details what the Democratic-led panel calls Trump’s misconduct in pressuring Ukraine to launch an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, his son Hunter and a conspiracy theory about interference in the 2016 election — and attempts by both the president and the White House to obstruct the committee’s inquiry.
The report states that the committee “found that President Trump, personally and acting through agents within and outside of the U.S. government, solicited the interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, to benefit his reelection.”
“The President engaged in this course of conduct for the benefit of his own presidential reelection, to harm the election prospects of a political rival, and to influence our nation’s upcoming presidential election to his advantage,” it said. “The President placed his own personal and political interests above the national interests of the United States, sought to undermine the integrity of the U.S. presidential election process, and endangered U.S. national security.”
The report also includes the public defense by Trump’s acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, who confirmed to reporters that the White House withheld U.S. military aid to Ukraine until it pursued a debunked conspiracy theory involving the Democratic National Committee’s server.
“We do that all the time,” Mulvaney said, adding, “I have news for everybody: Get over it.”
