WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Joe Biden will give his State of the Union address Thursday night and House GOP members had plenty to say in anticipation.

Both at a press conference and in individual interviews with press, Republican lawmakers continued to hammer Biden on familiar topics: the border and the economy.

“Tomorrow, the president could simply repeal his executive orders that have fueled, emboldened and made worse this crisis,” Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-N.Y.) said about the border.

Executive orders come directly from the president and can be changed or removed by the next administration. Typically, they are used to circumvent Congress if they are refusing to pass legislation on a given topic.

Congressman Scott Franklin (R-Fla.) went so far as to speculate that “sleeper cells” could have come across the border and are “waiting for the call” to attack.

“We could have something that would just make 9/11 pale in comparison,” he said.

The FBI’s report on crime statistics for 2023 have shown violent crime going down since a steep spike at the beginning of 2020.

And despite strong unemployment numbers and inflation in line with the Trump era, Republicans pointed to historically volatile commodities like gas and food prices as the main indicators of a poor economy.

“Our economic strength is in decline,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said. “Everyday goods are more expensive.”

“It was Joe Biden’s runaway spending that led to double digit inflation, historic interest rates and bank collapses,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said.

After Nikki Haley’s exit from the Republican presidential primary earlier today, the general election moved closer to a rematch of 2020. This would reset the record for the oldest candidates to run on major party tickets, which Trump and Biden originally set just four years ago. On Inauguration Day 2025, former President Trump will be 78 and President Joe Biden will be 82.
