House fire displaces family in Canton Township

CANTON TWP. ‒ A family of seven was displaced as the result of a fire at a home at 3250 Orchard View Drive SE on Thursday afternoon.

Fire Chief Christopher Smith said crews were called at 4:09 p.m. and arrived about two minutes later to find light to moderate smoke coming from the eaves.

Occupants were out of the house when firefighters arrived.

Residents said the fire started on the stove. The cause is under investigation.

It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control. They initially left the scene shortly before 9 p.m., but returned around 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m. after the fire rekindled, Smith said. They left the scene for the last time around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Smith said the house will probably be a total loss. The 1959 ranch house has an appraised value of $83,900, according to online records of the Stark County Auditor's Office. Smith estimated the value of the contents at $30,000.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Canton, Louisville and Nimishillen townships assisted. Tri-Division Ambulance responded.

The American Red Cross is assisting the residents.
