Tornado Watch issued for Acadiana

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – 2:30pm UPDATE- A Tornado Watch has been issued for Acadiana until 10pm. This includes, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, Vermilion, Evangeline, Acadia and Jefferson Davis Parish. A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado to form. Be prepared to take shelter indoors in a small interior room.

NOON UPDATE: The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the Enhanced Risk area to include more of western Acadiana. Damaging winds will be the primary concern this evening but tornadoes and large hail are possible.

Much of the weather this Thursday will be mostly cloudy, hot, and more humid as temperatures climb into the upper 80s. A few showers are possible too. Heavy storms are expected after 5:00 pm and could last through much of the evening.

Models are showing heavy and intense thunderstorms arrive this evening into Acadiana. The HRRR model shown above has another strong line of storms moving through Lafayette around midnight tonight. The threat for severe weather is lower compared to Monday’s event but damaging winds, tornadoes, and hail are possible again. Also, localized flash flooding is a possibility too as rainfall rates could be high.

A second batch of heavy storms is possible Friday afternoon along with another low risk for severe weather within our area. Overall, two day rainfall totals for Acadiana will be 3 to 5″ inches with isolated higher amounts.
