Hot 103 Jamz! celebrates 74th year in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Carter Broadcast Group has been in the radio business in Kansas City since 1950.

The station has been owned by the Carter family since 1950, created by Andrew “Skip” Carter.

“I’m of course the third generation, now we have younger people behind me that are up and coming,” said Chris Rod Carter, vice president of Carter Broadcast Group.

According to its history, “Skip” started KPRS playing original songs by Black artists like Ray Charles and James Brown.

Through his determination and overcoming obstacles, the Carter Broadcast Group is now the oldest Black-owned family operated broadcast company in the country.

“It’s bigger than me, the Carter family, the Carter Broadcast Group, it’s really about the community,” Chris Carter said. “Because without the community, we will not be where we are today, so it’s bigger than all of us.”

The company’s legacy is what inspired one listener to get on the other side of the speaker.

“Knowing that I am part of one of the oldest Black-owned radio stations in the country gives me great pride to be able to work for a station with Carter Broadcast Group,” DJ Chris “Playmaker” said.

DJ Chris Playmaker has been apart of the station for 16 years. Looking back, he’s proud of uniting his community together through music and different events.

“Still be able to continue to touch people and still be able to say and greet people who tell us, hey my mom or my grandmother used to listen to Hot 103 Jamz!”

The station is giving away money as part of its 74th celebration. They’re also getting ready for next year, as they hit a major milestone.
