Hostage situation in northwest Kansas ends with suspect in custody

COLBY, Kan. (KSNW) — A hostage situation in Colby, Kansas, Tuesday morning ended with a suspect in custody.

According to the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, they received a call around 9:46 a.m. for the report of a possible armed intruder. The call was later changed to a hostage-barricaded suspect.

The Colby Police Department, the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation arrived at the scene.

In the alley behind the home, the TCSO says a car with a Texas plate was found.

“While trying to establish contact with someone inside, one of the hostages was able to climb out a bedroom window,” said the TCSO. “It was determined there were three female adult hostages still inside with two children.”

The TCSO says the hostage taker was identified as a 41-year-old man who had driven from Texas to locate the women and children in the home.

At around 10:38 a.m., the man walked out of the house with the hostages. He was taken into custody, according to the TCSO.

An investigation is ongoing. KSN will provide more information as it becomes available.
