Hospital safety grades are in: Here’s how Grand Strand medical centers performed

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Leapfrog Hospital grades for spring 2024 are in, and five of the six medical centers along the Grand Strand received a “B” or better.

Grand Strand Regional Medical Center earned an A, scoring better than average in four out of seven categories for problems with surgery, six out of seven in safety problems, four out of six in infections and three out of five in practices to prevent errors.

The hospital struggled in the doctors, nurses and hospital staff section, only earning better than average in one out of four categories. It declined to report nursing and bedside care for patients and effective leadership to prevent errors.

Conway Medical Center earned a B, excelling in practices to prevent errors, scoring better than average in four out of six categories. The group also scored well in doctors, nurses and hospital staff, scoring better than average in five out of six categories.

CMC did struggle in the safety problems category, scoring worse than average in three out of seven categories.

Other Grand Strand hospitals like Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital earned an A, while McLeod Seacoast in Little River and McLeod Loris both earned B’s. Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital received a C.

South Carolina ranked No.9 in the U.S. in hospital grades, earning an A in 42% of its hospitals. The Palmetto State was ranked No.3 in the fall 2023 grades.
