Horseheads’ Jermaine Truax proud of role at Bucknell

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Bucknell University is under the leadership and guidance from one of our own.

Jermaine Truax, a Horseheads High School graduate, has been the athletic director at Bucknell since 2018 and was awarded the additional title of vice president of athletics and recreation for the school last August.

Already, Truax has made history for Bison athletics. Jermaine is the first black athletic director ever at Bucknell and he’s been instrumental in fundraising and building up several sports at the school. In September, Truax was appointed as a member of the NCAA D-I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Oversight Committee.

Jermaine will now serve a four-year term on the committee in an effort to maintain and enhance the overall student-athlete experience for all schools.

After his years at Horseheads, Truax played college football at Edinboro University and went on to earn a masters degree in sport management at Slippery Rock University. He is also pursuing a doctorate at Bowling Green University.

Prior to Bucknell, Truax served as the athletic director at Loyola University Chicago. In 2018, Loyola made national headlines and made the NCAA D-I Men’s Basketball Final Four. That year, the acclaimed Sister Jean was highlighted as a source of inspiration for the program who made history that year.

From coaching, to working in scouting in the Arena Football League with the San Jose Sabercats and the Buffalo Bills in the NFL, Truax continues to live a dream.

18 Sports had the opportunity to speak with Truax at the EIWA Wrestling Championships over the weekend at Bucknell. Truax discusses his Elmira region ties and passion for what he does at the D-I level.
