Horseheads girls basketball riding high into STAC final

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – Horseheads girls basketball is gearing up for a STAC Championship.

The Blue Raiders will play Chenango Forks at 6 PM in Johnson City Friday night. If Horseheads can win, it will be the first time in program history they will have earned back-to-back STAC Championships. No team has been on more of a hot streak than Horseheads in Section IV.

The Blue Raiders have now won 13 games in a row and stand at (14-4) overall. Chenango Forks stands at (14-3) and is ranked seventh in the state in Class B. The Blue Devils have a streak of their own, winning their last 11 games straight. Tomorrow night, Horseheads believes in their approach, something that’s worked all year long.

“Done a great job prepping us in practice,” Horseheads senior guard Sophia Bonnell said. “We do a lot of film work, amounts of preparation and scouting reports and knowing what we need to do on offense and defense.”

Horseheads head coach Andy Scott, now in his 25th season for the Blue Raiders, says all of the hard work the team is putting in is truly paying off.

“It’s all a credit to the kids, they come in everyday they’re locked in, they want to learn and get better…they’re focused,” Scott said. “That’s not easy to do when they have this much time off, all the distractions they have. It’s a credit to who they are.”

18 Sports will have highlights of Friday night’s STAC Championship game on The 18 Sports Blitz at 11. The Blue Raiders have also earned the top seed in the Section IV Class AA bracket. Horseheads will host Binghamton on Tuesday, February 27 at 6 PM in the semis.
