Horse rescue organization reclaims neglected horses

MOUNTAINBURG, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Shepard Mountain Horse Rescue in Mountainburg reclaims several horses previously adopted out and neglected, but one, named Cynder, did not survive.

Holly Shepard, co-owner of the rescue, expressed her sorrow and determination to seek justice.

Shepard said the rescue allows people to adopt horses following a minor background check. The family who adopted Cynder, whose identity is withheld due to an ongoing investigation, had invested in the rescue, giving the team confidence that the new home would be suitable.

However, a welfare check just six weeks later revealed the horses were malnourished. “If they would have let us come sooner, that last life could have been saved,” Shepard said. “The vet reports from up there did state that that horse died, had to be euthanized from starvation.”

The rescue, a registered 501(c)(3) organization, has garnered significant support with over 22,000 followers on its Facebook page. The hashtag #JusticeForCynder has been trending among the followers, reflecting the community’s outrage and support.

Shepard and her team urge the community to report any signs of animal neglect. “We want people to say something if they ever see animals in distress,” Shepard emphasized.
