Horry County solicitor looks to shut down pair of downtown Myrtle Beach motels

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Horry County’s top prosecutor is looking to shut down a pair of decades-old motels in the heart of Myrtle Beach, citing their use as drug exchanges.

James Battle, a special prosecutor in the 15th Judicial Circuit, filed a petition in Common Pleas Court on Friday seeking a temporary injunction against the Southern Breeze motel at 1901 S. Ocean Blvd. and its next-door neighbor, the Summer Wind.

Both are owned by the same parent company, according to court filings.

“Since respondents purchased the Southern Breeze and Summer Wind in 2021, there has been little to no management or oversight of the business operations of the motels,” Battle wrote. “In this vacuum, drug activity and breaches of peace have become rampant at these locations.”

In addition to seeking their closure, Richardson’s office wants the businesses for costs tied to “abating the public nuisance” both cause.

No court date had been set as of Monday afternoon.
