Horry County Schools names interim superintendent

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Horry County Schools has chosen an interim superintendent amid a nationwide search to find a replacement for Rick Maxey, who plans to retire.

Eddie Ingram will take over leadership of the 48,000-student district on July 1, following his appointment by the board of education on Wednesday.

Ingram’s career in education has spanned 42 years and includes a doctorate in education from East Carolina University in 2002, the district said on Thursday. Most of his time has been spent in North Carolina, including when he was superintendent of Franklin County Schools from 2009 to 2013.

He was also superintendent of the Darlington County School District beginning in 2013 and the Berkeley County School District starting in 2017 before retiring in 2021, the district said. During his retirement, he served as interim superintendent of Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools in North Carolina and the interim executive director of Foxborough Regional Charter School in Massachusetts.

“The Horry County Board of Education is currently in the process of receiving proposals from superintendent search firms,” the district said Thursday in an email. “These firms will have the opportunity to present their proposals to the Board at an upcoming meeting. Following this, the Board will select and engage a firm to assist with a comprehensive national search for the District’s next superintendent.”

Maxey has led the district since 2015. He notified board members earlier this month that he is ready to end his 35-year education career.

Horry County Schools is the third-largest district in South Carolina, trailing only Greenville and Charleston counties.
