The Hornell girls and Avoca-Prattsburgh boys each continued impressive championship runs in Section V, on Saturday. The Hornell girls won their 2nd straight section title in Class B, in a rematch with Dansville. The Red Raiders rode a late surge from Selena Maldonado, who scored 20 of her 25 total points in the 2nd half. Maldonado’s effort earned her tournament MVP and helped her team to the 44-36 win. After the game, the Red Raiders shared a special moment with standout Jordan Dyring, who was injured early in the contest. Hornell’s Lillian Hoyt and Raegan Evingham joined Maldonado on the All-Tournament Team.

As a result of the win, Hornell will head to states to take on the Section VI champion. Opening round action begins Saturday, March 9th at 1 p.m. at Finger Lakes Community College.

On the boy’s side, Avoca-Prattsburgh defeated Elba 50-37, to claim their 4th straight Class D championship. AP’s Macoy Putnam won tournament MVP and earned his 5th straight section crown. Macoy and head coach Brian Putnam won a title with Prattsburgh prior to combining with Avoca. Joining Putnam on the All-Tournament team are teammates J.J. Crowder, Daniel Stilson, and Hammondsport’s Henry Morrison. The Titans will now head to Buffalo State University, to take on the Section VI champion in the opening round of the NYSPHSAA tournament. AP’s matchup is slated for Saturday, March 9th at 6 p.m.

In addition to the 2 local champions, several teams fell short of a section and district title. The Watkins Glen girls fell in the Section IV Class C final, to Moravia. The Lake Hawks were defeated 50-42, despite 24 combined points from Brianna Hatch (13) and Rachel Vickio (11). Back in the Section V boys playoffs, Arkport-Canaseraga saw their season end. Arkport-Canaseraga fell in the Class C3 title game 70-51, to Batavia Notre Dame. In Pennsylvania, the Troy boys and girls each fell in District IV action. The Troy boys suffered their 1st loss of the season and fell short of a Class AAA title. The 67-57 loss to Loyalsock is not the end of the season for the Trojans, as their runner-up finish qualifies them for a PIAA tournament bid. On the the girl’s side, Troy saw their season end with a loss to Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg outlasted the Trojans 30-24 to take 3rd place in Class AAA and punch a ticket to states.
