Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks to hold week long celebration

CHILLICOTHE — Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks will be celebrating World Heritage Week this month by commemorating Ohio's only UNESCO World Heritage Site. From April 13 to April 21 the parks will be hosting several events to welcome and educate visitors.

Here is a look at the scheduled events:

Saturday, April 13

Remnants Walking Tour

  • Newark Earthworks

    • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

    • Guided walking tour of portions of the Newark Earthworks starting and ending at the Great Circle Museum. The route will be over mostly level terrain on public sidewalks, covering about three miles.

Sunday, April 14

Open House

  • Newark Earthworks

    • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    • Open house at the Newark Earthworks where you can explore the largest set of geometric earthworks. Take guided tours, do hands-on activities and explore pop-up interpretation tables of the Sun and Moon in relation to the world heritage sites.

Monday, April 15

Open House

  • Newark Earthworks

    • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    • Open house at the Newark Earthworks where you can explore the largest set of geometric earthworks. Take guided tours and participate in hands-on activities.

Sharing the Hopewell with the World Exhibit Opening

  • Hopewell Culture National Historical Park (Mound City Visitor Center)

    • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    • View a new special exhibit “Sharing the Hopewell with the World." Artwork created by students from all over the country will be on display in the Mound City Group Visitor Center auditorium.

Thursday, April 18

Natural History Tour

  • Fort Ancient

    • 11 a.m., 12 p.m.,1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

    • Hourly natural history tours throughout several miles of hiking trails at this nature preserve.

Friday, April 19

Archaeological Tour

  • Fort Ancient

    • 1 p.m.

    • Take an archaeological tour of the grounds of the largest hilltop enclosure in North America.

Saturday, April 20

Gardening & Cooking Demonstrations

  • Fort Ancient

    • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    • Gardening and cooking demonstrations all day in the interpretive garden behind the museum.

Sunday, April 21

Gardening & Cooking Demonstrations

  • Fort Ancient

    • 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

    • Gardening and cooking demonstrations all day in the interpretive garden behind the museum.
