Honor Flight taking 17 local veterans to Washington D.C. in recognition of service

BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR)—Local veterans from the Korean and Vietnam service eras will be traveling to Washington D.C. on April 12 for free as a part of the Central and Southwest Virginia Honor Flight program.

The Honor Flight Network launched in 2005 and has escorted over 295,000 veterans to memorials created in their honor at no cost, each veteran is accompanied by a trained volunteer guardian who assists them in any way possible, including pushing wheelchairs, carrying belongings, or simply joining in a day of celebration and reflection.

The trip will depart from the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford on Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to return to the memorial on Sunday, April 14. The hub will be bringing veterans from Virginia their memorials and will be the journey of a lifetime for many who were properly thanked.

On this trip, Honor Flight will be taking two Korean War and 15 Vietnam War Veterans.

“The fifty-three years of pent-up frustration, disappointment, and at times anger that Vietnam Veterans experienced, generated by the unexpected and undeserved negative treatment received upon our return home has to an immeasurable degree been erased by my Honor Flight experience,” said Vietnam Veteran Philip Wallace, who participated in an Honor Flight trip in Oct. 2023. “This past weekend clearly established for me that our service is respected and that people like all of you involved in our trip have made it possible for us Vietnam Veterans to accept that we honorably served our country.”
