Homes for sale in Palm Beach: Updated Midtown condo near Worth Ave. ‘had great potential’

Featuring her own decorating touches, interior designer Suzi Hansen of Hansen Design is parting with the condominium she and husband Hunter own in Midtown.

The condo — No. 6 at the Island House, 354 Chilean Ave. — has served as the couple’s primary residence since they bought it in 2019.

But the Hunters have lately been busy building a house in the Old Town neighborhood of Bluffton, South Carolina, where they had rented a home. And with a cottage in East Hampton, New York and an apartment in North Palm Beach, they have decided to say goodbye to the island, at least for now.

“I love Palm Beach. It just keeps getting better and better. It wouldn’t surprise me if we end up coming back,” says Suzi, who is not only a decorator but also renovates and builds.

Premier Estate Properties agent Rosalind Clarke has the listing for the Hansen’s two-bedroom, two-bath condo, with 1,285 square feet of living space, inside and out. It’s priced with its furnishings for $3.495 million. This residence will be sold with covered parking for one car and open-air guest parking for one car.

Built in 1983, the Island House comprises the main six-story building with 30 units and a two-story building with four units. The latter includes a guest apartment that residents can use.

The condo is on the top floor of the main building, which stands at the corner of Cocoanut Row. Amenities of the full-service, pet-friendly building include a pool, door staff and on-site management.

In the Hansens’ condo immediately east of the foyer the living and dining areas open to the kitchen and access the covered balcony. Both bedrooms are to the south.

“When I found this apartment, I thought it had great potential,” Suzi recalls. “It just needed some changes.”

Those changes included replacing the floors with wide-plank European white oak. “They are a kind of sand color and added to the ambience,” she says.

She also renovated the kitchen, which is fitted with mitered-edge white-marble countertops, tile backsplashes, professional-grade appliances, Shaker-style wood cabinetry and a peninsula, which accommodates pull-up seating.

“Taking down the wall between the kitchen and opening it up to the living areas drastically changed the apartment,” she says.

The Hansens also updated the electrical system, installed impact-resistant sliding-glass doors and added a washer and dryer.

They renovated the bathrooms, finishing the main bathroom in Thasos marble.

Suzi chose white as the basis of her color palette, and inspired by the treetop views, brought in touches of green for the furnishings.

“In my mind, I wanted to create a mix, a transition between casual and formal,” she explains, “with the (dining) banquette, for example, being more formal and the seagrass chairs being more casual.”

She says she and her husband will miss the island and her condo, including its location near dining and shopping destinations, a couple of blocks north of Worth Avenue and its charming vias. And the Town of Palm Beach Marina, which recently underwent an extensive upgrade and expansion, is a block away.

“I love walking out the back door and being on my favorite via, Via Parigi. Also, I think the new marina is beautiful,” she says.
