Homeowners help crews extinguish large grass fire in Arapahoe County

DENVER (KDVR) — The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said a large grass fire was quickly extinguished Sunday as homeowners helped crews fight the flames.

The fire was burning near E. 6th Avenue and Manila Road, between Watkins and Bennett. The fire was at two acres when crews arrived, and wind was pushing the blaze to the west.

South Metro Fire Rescue told FOX31 that nine agencies were on the scene. ACSO said a few homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

ACSO told FOX31 that the fire looked to be mostly under control at 3:30 p.m., and said that it was extinguished quickly as some local homeowners were helping crews put the fire out.

At 3:41 p.m., ACSO said the fire was completely out and residents were able to return to their homes. The fire burned a total of 127 acres.

Aurora Fire Rescue said two farms and several homes were saved from the blaze.

One man was treated for smoke inhalation, but he was released on the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators attributed the cause of the fire to accidental factors, Aurora Fire Rescue said.
