Homeowner finds hand grenade while doing yard work in Columbia Twp

COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A homeowner found a hand grenade while doing yard work on Friday evening, deputies say.

Just after 6:30 p.m., deputies with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office were sent to CR 388 near 46th Street after receiving reports that an explosive was found.

Responding deputies learned that a homeowner was doing yard work and found a hand grenade partially buried in the yard. The sheriff’s office said the hand grenade is believed to have been in the ground for multiple years.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety bomb squad was called to the scene.

While the hand grenade appeared to be a training grenade, it had suspicious modifications to it. A thorough investigation determined that the training grenade had been turned into a “live improvised explosive device,” the sheriff’s office said.

It was taken to a safe location and destroyed by bomb squad technicians, the sheriff’s office said.

The case remains under investigation.
