Homeless man accused of assaulting girl walking home from school arrested

(KRON) — A homeless man who police say sexually assaulted a girl on her way home from school last month has been arrested, the San Jose Police Department said. Julian Salvador Martinez, 50, grabbed the victim, a female minor, when she was walking in the area of South 11th Street on April 9 at around 5:26 p.m.

The victim was underneath the I-280 overpass when Martinez allegedly grabbed her and sexually assaulted her, police said. The suspect was riding a bicycle when he approached the victim. After the victim fought him off, Martinez fled the scene on the bicycle, according to San Jose PD spokesperson Stacie Shih.

Martinez, according to police, is known to hang out at “The Jungle,” a sprawling homeless encampment along a creek adjacent to Senter Road and Keyes Street.

On Thursday, May 16, SJPD patrol officers located and arrested Martinez in the City of San Jose after a member of the community who submitted a tip. He was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple crimes, including sexual assault, police said.
