Home sales up sharply in Maine in December

Home sales up nearly 12 percent in Maine in December, median prices also up

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- Maine realtors say both sales and median prices of single family homes rose in December, reflecting national trends.

The Maine Real Estate Information System, a multiple listing service, says sales were up 11.8 percent to 888 homes. It also says the medium price rose 6.25 percent to $170,000, meaning half the homes sold for more and half sold for less.

Nationally, sales of single-family, existing homes rose 11.5 percent in December, while median sales prices were up by just under 11 percent during the month.

Maine Association of Realtors President Bart Stevens says many Mainers seemed to be sitting on the sidelines waiting for the right time to buy, and 2012 seemed to be it.
