A Home That Nails the Bright and Airy Aesthetic
Imagine a modern home getting all nice and cozy with farmhouse vibes and you're on the right track. This space is a light, bright, shiplap heaven designed by Jessica Dolan of 2540 Love and captured by Alyssa Rosenheck (who also has some major styling skills might I add). From Alyssa...As an interiors photographer and stylist, I love helping my clients produce and find the right balance of layering accessories for the lens! We added character with a few vintage rugs and beautiful throws and her kitchen came to life literally when I envisioned greenery for her beautiful open shelves! This is what I like to call proof of life... I sprinkle it throughout the homes I shoot!! This was a very light, bright, and fun collaboration with designer, Jessica Dolan of 2540Love.com. Plus, on shoots and leading up to the big day teamwork is the foundation of true success and this is what Jessica and I embodied. I am thrilled to share some of her design choices per room that will really resonate with everyone who gravitates towards achieving a bright and airy aesthetic for their home.
LIVING ROOM:All the interior walls were removed in the living room as well. White shiplap replaced drywall to create a neutral backdrop while providing interest and texture. We chose a natural fiber rug layered with a vintage rug, 2 leather bench seat sofas and a custom built coffee table for this space. We layered buffalo check, mudcloth and other patterned pillows on the sofas which provide visual interest (and comfort) without being too matchy matchy.
ENTRY:The front door was changed to a 4 light wooden door to allow as much natural light as possible. The coat closet was removed allowing more space in the master suite located on the other side of the wall. The carpeted stairs and wooden handrail were removed and replaced with white oak hardwood treads finished with a custom European oil finish and custom metal railing. A door was added under the stairs to take advantage of the storage space.
SITTING ROOM + OFFICE:In this space we removed all the walls and added custom built ins painted the same white as the shiplap throughout. We also replaced the fireplace mantle with a custom built raw white oak mantle and painted the brick fireplace the same white.
We layered a vintage rug in the office space and added a custom made desk with West Elm office chair. In the sitting room we chose 4 swivel arm chairs in a sturdy linen weave fabric, a round, marble top coffee table and a cowhide rug.
DINING ROOM:There was no true pantry in the kitchen so after eliminating the wall between the kitchen and dining we opted for a whole wall of pantry cabinets in the dining space. A white and brass cone pendant, round white oak table and easily wipeable white chairs were chosen for this space.
KITCHEN:We wanted everything to stay light and bright throughout the home but didn’t necessarily want an all white kitchen. We chose navy for the custom built base cabinetry and honed Carrara marble countertops. We then went with classic square subway tile, modern brass hardware and custom white oak floating shelving to bring a bit of fun and whimsy to this classic kitchen.
MASTER BATH:The Carrara marble hexagon floor tile used throughout the bathroom and shower add dimension and texture to this serene space. Classic hardware and mirrors were chosen to mix metals and compliment the brass chandelier and sconces.
MASTER BEDROOM:The master suite boasts an upholstered sleigh bed with white linen bedding topped off with a striped wool pompom blanket purchased at a local boutique.
From Jessica...Originally the house was a cape cod style with a low roofline, flat facade and red reclaimed brick. We added a shed dormer in the bonus room and arched front porch entry to add dimension and interest. The reclaimed brick was painted Sherwin Williams Pure White. The shutters were removed and cedar lintels added above the windows. The interior architecture of the main level was classic 70s with a small foyer with coat closet, carpeted staircase and separate living room, family room, dining room and kitchen. There were two main level bedrooms with a shared hall bath in between. We wanted to completely update every nook and cranny of this 1970s home. Opening up all the main living spaces was ideal for this family of five and allowed us to incorporate functionality and the beauty of natural light. Each zone was created to flow right into the next allowing conversation to carry from space to space.
