Hollywood hates that Trump will decide new Supreme Court justice
The United States, and subsequently the internet, was shocked yesterday to learn that after 30 years of service, Justice Anthony Kennedy was retiring from the Supreme Court.
The announcement concerned many because now President Trump will have the task of nominating a candidate to fill the vacant seat. Kennedy was known as the swing vote on the court who could land on either side of the issues. He lived up to his nickname, “The Decider,” several times during his decades-long career, including casting the pivotal vote to legalize same-sex marriage in 2015.
However, Trump is unlikely to nominate a moderate judge. He’s expected to choose a conservative-leaning judge, just as he did last year, when he chose Neil Gorsuch as a justice. This would tip the scales in favor of conservatives on the court 5-4 and would likely reshape American policies for several decades, since Supreme Court justices are not subject to term limits.
This was a hard pill to swallow for many of the politically engaged celebrities in Hollywood. Kathy Griffin, Chrissy Teigen, Billy Eichner, and others dramatically voiced their concerns on social media following the bombshell retirement announcement.

“There should be no consideration of a Supreme Court nominee until the American people have a chance to weigh in. McConnell set that standard in 2016 when he denied Judge Garland a hearing for nearly a year, and the Senate should follow the McConnell Standard." pic.twitter.com/8NkfmAXtpH

Hey hey, fuck off everyone who voted for Trump or didn’t vote at all. The SCOTUS is going to be a dumpster fire and it’s your fault and we’re going to have to live with that for the rest of our lives. 👏👏👏👏

Every single institution or agency in our government is being dismantled by this administration. Congress, gone, SCOTUS, gone, the Executive branch, in the hands of a madman, the FBI, DOE, EPA, etc. etc. etc. And you thought it couldn’t happen here.
