Hollyoaks star Nikki Sanderson has received an apology from Mirror Group Newspapers, following allegations that the publisher had hired private investigators to gather stories about her.

The court heard from a barrister for Mirror Group Newspapers who stated that the group "unequivocally apologises" to her, adding that "it shouldn't have happened and won't again". (via BBC)

Andrew Green KC said Mirror Group Newspapers admitted to four occasions between 2004 and 2005 where private investigators had been used to target the actress.

However, the group denies targeting her more widely.

Sanderson is currently giving evidence in a High Court case against the newspaper group, alleging that the publisher used unlawful information-gathering techniques to uncover private information about her.

Her claim covers 37 articles written between 1999 and 2009, which includes her time playing Candice Stowe in Coronation Street.

In her witness statement, Sanderson said she felt "attacked" by people more powerful than her and stated that it was "particularly distressing" to learn that the activities may have continued for a period of many years.

The actress added that she had also been subject to "mental and physical abuse" as a result of public backlash from the articles in question.

Sanderson's barrister David Sherborne told the court earlier this week that the articles had a "long-standing effect on her personality right up to the present day". The Mirror Group Newspapers had previously denied using phone hacking or unlawful information gathering for 35 of the 37 articles.
