Ro Lomax's gender identity journey is set to continue facing setbacks from those around her in Hollyoaks' important new storyline.

Emotional scenes of the Channel 4 soap have seen Rose Lomax questioning their gender identity, turning to Kitty Draper for advice as they struggle with the monumental, life-changing event.

Eventually, Ro came to the realisation that they identified as male and asked parents Tony and Diane to refer to them by he-him pronouns after coming out.

The touching moment was met with mixed reactions, with Tony and Diane struggling to come to terms with the news, and placing blame on Kitty.

As the couple work on supporting their child, upcoming scenes will see Rose tell his parents that he wants to be called Ro from now on.

Diane struggles with the change initially, but Tony agrees and, wanting to support Ro further, speaks to Mercedes McQueen in preparation for Ro's return to school.

Tony goes to Hollyoaks High School headteacher Carter Shepherd following the chat and informs him that Rose will now be known as Ro, leaving Diane upset that Tony spoke to the school without her present.

Despite offering Tony and Diane help with the transition, Carter is reluctant to call Ro by his new name. However, the student stands his ground.

Elsewhere, Tony and Diane seek advice from Kitty who informs them it's important Ro doesn't feel any conflict between them during this time. As such, Tony speaks to Lucas Hay and informs him of the importance of referring to Ro with he/him pronouns so he does not push him away further.

Diane actor Alex Fletcher exclusively told Digital Spy late last year about the impending "massive story" involving Ro: "This story is gonna be a slow burn, and like I said, I think people are going to really invest in Rose's character. She's just gorgeous and I think when the audience see what she's going to go through, they're going to really feel it with her."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.
