Hollyoaks is gearing up to air a huge showdown between killer Mac Nightingale and his son James in big scenes.

New pictures hint at a huge fight between Mac (David Easter) and James (Gregory Finnegan) as scenes next week see Mac get desperate as he's confronted over the school gas explosion and later arrested during Neeta's memorial service.

Viewers will already know that James hates Mac after suffering traumatic abuse at his dad's hands when he was a child, and this week James tries to manipulate Hunter into taking revenge on Mac.

But it looks like James may be forced to fight his own battles instead, if these new pictures are anything to go by.

"In true Hollyoaks fashion, it's all rather dramatic," Gregory said of Neeta's memorial service. "The truth has yet to emerge, but there are some significant clues given away in the heat of the moment."

Speaking of James' ideal revenge on his father, Gregory continued to say he thinks James wants Mac to suffer.

"He would want him to suffer over a long period I should think – but when it comes to it, it's hard to get away from the fact that he is his father," he said.

"I think the abuse [James] has suffered at Mac's hands over the years has deeply affected his ability to make decisive moves concerning him. It would be easier to get someone else to take away that responsibility."

Gregory also called shooting the domestic abuse scenes "harrowing".

"The fact that people are dealing with these issues in their daily lives is a real tragedy," he said. "These stories can hopefully shine a light on the darker areas of our society, and enable people to free themselves from these appalling cycles of violence."

James has been named as one of the suspects named in Hollyoaks' upcoming Mac attack storyline, as flashforward scenes airing next week will feature a lifeless Mac in The Dog car park, along with Marnie, Darren, Hunter and Sally.

Could it be that James is determined to take his revenge on his father once and for all? We'll have to wait and see.

Hollyoaks airs weekdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with E4 sharing first-look episodes at 7pm.
