Holland Elementary community raised money for an 8YO shot in the head

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Eight-year-old Landyn Davis was inside his home playing video games when a stray bullet hit him.

A close family friend said doctors are using a wheelchair to help strengthen his muscles.

“He opens his eyes on and off throughout the day, but not for too long and usually not very wide,” she told 10 On Your Side. “We still don’t know if he can walk or talk. We are still hopeful every day, and we will never give up on him, and he still needs justice.”

As he continues to recover in the hospital, one of Holland Elementary School’s third-grade classrooms is missing one of its bright students.

“He is so giving,” said Landyn’s teacher, Anna Fisher. “He will give the shirt off of his back to another student in the morning. Breakfast is kind of a situation. They all come in with different breakfasts. Landyn is always the first person to speak up, say, ‘Hey, does anybody not like their yogurt this morning? I’ll switch you.”

The Holland community wanted to show support for his family by raising money to help with medical bills and any other costs.

“We all came together just to bless this family and provide them with as much support as we could,” said Holland Elementary principal Dr. Callie Richardson.

This time, it was at Buffalo Wild Wings. The wing spot donated 10% of dine-in and takeout bills that presented a special ticket.

“Just get a large number of our supporters and our community members together as a physical show of support so that the family knows that we’re behind them,” said Holland Elementary assistant principal Christine McCune, “not only helping to raise finances for them, but also just to be there, present together, thinking about our kiddo, who we love so dearly.”

Fisher said the outpouring of support shows just how special the 8-year-old is.

“The fact that the community, they’re going out of their way and they’re showing all their love and support and giving and just being there for him,” Fisher said, “it shows who he is as a student and just how he is as a person. He a beam of sunshine.”

If you didn’t make it to the fundraiser, the Holland Elementary PTA president said they are planning more.
