Holdenville Public Schools alert parents to taking precautions after scabies confirmed

HOLDENVILLE, Okla. (KFOR) – Holdenville Public Schools are asking parents to remain aware after confirmed cases of scabies at Thomas Intermediate School.

School officials say the district continues to follow all local and State Health Department guidelines for disinfecting the school multiple times a day and after school for scabies and flu season.

Scabies is a common allergic skin rash that is caused by scabies mites, which are found on humans. The mite digs under the skin and lays eggs, which then hatch. The new mites burrow more paths and lay more eggs. The rash appears as red bumps and short wavy lines on the skin. The rash itches intensely, according to school officials.

Holdenville officials say, scabies is not dangerous but is very contagious and irritating. Officials are asking parents, staff and the community to please take the following precautions:

  1. Watch for signs of an itchy rash over the next few weeks on your child

  2. If a rash develops, see your health care provide immediately.

  3. Please notify the school if your child has these symptoms.
