There have been more Knight Rider spin-offs and sequels than most people can keep track of.

The (very) '80s original show featured The Hoff as a crime-fighting agent who drove a car packed with artificial intelligence. At the time it was a decidedly hi-tech premise, but in this day and age it could totally happen.

Well, it seems like there might be yet another Knight Rider reboot coming our way, with The Hoff himself in a star role – and he has someone in mind to helm a follow-up to the original series: Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

David, of course, made a cameo appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 and even recorded a song for the soundtrack, so he and James have history – history The Hoff is keen to capitalise on.

"I've given some ideas to James for Knight Rider," he told Hollywood Reporter. "He responded in a big way."

Okay, this sounds all shades of awesome. So what does David envisage for a Knight Rider reboot? Well, he has some very clear ideas on what he doesn't want.

"If it does go forward, I don't want it to be spoofed like Baywatch or 21 Jump Street," he said. "Those films lose what it's about, and you have to respect the fans."

It was previously reported that a 2017 reboot directed by The Fast and the Furious director Justin Lin would be coming our way, but word on that project has gone quiet. Perhaps James Gunn is about to take the wheel.

Whoever ends up directing this movie, here's hoping that David gets that old '80s perm back.
