This journalist used a Ziploc bag as a clutch on the red carpet
Ziploc: for leftovers, snacks, and…accessorizing…? The American favorite for clear resealable pouches is entering the handbag business — at least in Hoda Kotb’s world.
Kotb attended the TIME 100 Gala on Tuesday night carrying her belongings in a see-through zip-close bag, and her reasoning makes perfect sense.
The co-host of TODAY was being honored at the event. And instead of carrying a purse to match with her white lace one-shoulder gown, she walked the red carpet, did interviews, and spent the entire evening carrying her cellphone and other necessities in a bag usually used for storing leftovers and snacks. And she only seemed slightly embarrassed by it.
Her colleague Willie Geist was one of the first to notice the silly yet practical accessory during his interview with Kotb and her fellow honoree Savannah Guthrie. Geist asked them about their last online purchase when Kotb whipped out a handy plastic bag holding her cellphone, which held the answer to that question.
That’s when Geist noticed her untraditional accessory. “Wait, what? What’s the bag?” he asked before Guthrie tried to explain the situation. “Don’t even,” she began. “I tried to give her a purse, she doesn’t want it.” Kotb then answered Geist’s question, calling it, her “purse.”
Geist then joked about fashion outlets noting the next day that her clutch was by a designer named Ziploc.
Kotb was also photographed at the event carrying her clutch, which she at times unsuccessfully tried to hide behind her back.
The team revisited the event on the show on Wednesday morning, and Kotb explained her odd choice of handbag. “That’s all you need,” she told Geist. “It’s just easier and less complicated.” Apparently she also worries about losing her handbag, so when it’s less valuable, there’s less at stake. Guthrie again noted that she offered her an extra bag, but Kotb said, “I’ll lose it, I can’t,” before Al Roker pointed out it would make it easier to take home leftovers. It’s also nice not to have to dig through your clutch to find your lipstick considering the see-through plastic makes everything easily accessible.
