‘Hitting the Skys’: Abilene’s Flying Bison Baseball Team Starts Season Soon

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC)— The Abilene Flying Bison minor league baseball team held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at McMurry University’s Walt Diggers Field as it prepares for its inaugural season.

The first cheers for the Abilene Flying Bison were ‘herd’ this morning at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Walt Driggers Field. The Abilene Chamber of Commerce Redcoats were in attendance to present Bison President Scott Kirk with a certificate of recognition for their commitment to the city.

Kevin Birkla is one of many who have been assisting the team with their corporate partnerships, and he explained how the outreach he has seen for this team so far has been remarkable.

“To see the community support is cool on my side, too, because it’s what we need. It’s what the team needs. It’s really big to have the local businesses backing a new endeavor here, and George, the owner, is taking care of everyone here, and he’s making sure he’s doing everything right,” Birkla said.

The director of marketing for the Flying Bison Cat Duguay outlined how the team’s lineup will work and how they will proceed with the season, which is a little different.

“For our season, we’ll basically have players coming from all over the country to play in Abilene for the summer. It goes from the end of May to the beginning of August, so even though it is local, we are having people coming from all over to play with us, which is really exciting,” Duguay said.

Many here in Abilene may remember the former minor league team, the Prairie Dogs. Memories of those games have fans wanting to relive those experiences with a newer generation. Chris Herrington is one of those individuals, and he tells us how he can’t wait to share these experiences with his children.

“Some of my memories of when I was a kid going to Prairie Dogs games, and going to see the players, and watching these larger-than-life kind of superheroes in uniform. They would come out and sign autographs after the game. Got to go with my dad, and so I’m excited for Abilene to have a chance for me to share that with my kids,” Herrington said.

The Abilene Flying Bisons will kick off their season at McMurry University’s Walt Driggers Field on May 23, 2024.
