Port City Life Newsletter: Hitting the highlights of a hectic Wilmington calendar

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter John Staton.

Something I often say to people is that there's so much going on in Wilmington these days it's nearly impossible to keep up with it all.

Partly, that's to give myself an out if and when I miss something, but the added bonus is that it's also true. Musical happenings are especially robust, and you'd have a pretty healthy calendar if you only included stuff happening at area breweries.

Start including everybody else, however, not to mention all the other events, festivals, performances and such, and things get real crazy real quick. We don't have the space, time or manpower to offer a comprehensive list of every single thing going on in Southeastern North Carolina each week, but we do hit most of the highlights if I do say so myself.

As always, shoot me an email if you want to highlight an upcoming event, and if I miss something, please let me know. Now, let's get this weekend started.

Weekend weather outlook

It's been a rainy, cloudy week and the weekend is looking like more of the same. Things should start out nicely enough on Friday (partly cloudy, highs in the mid 60s) before the rain sets in on Saturday. Should see some clearing on Sunday afternoon for what could be a pretty nice day, sunny with highs in the mid 60s.

Outdoor concert season, like spring itself, is so close we can almost see, hear and feel it.

And while the first concert of the year at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater isn't until March 15 (the New York acousto-pop outfit Lawrence), the good news there's plenty of good live music this weekend to tide you over.

Chatham County Line plays an album release show for their new record, "Hiyo," March 9 at Bourgie Nights.

To wit: Sweet bluegrass at the Palm Room with ShadowGrass, folk rock/Americana from Chatham County Line at Bourgie Nights, heavy metal with Modern Man at Reggie's and even some classical with the N.C. Symphony at the Wilson Center.

And while it is a music-heavy week in terms of events, we've also got some theater (in the form of one-act plays) from the Mouths of Babes company, some tree-and-flower-related events, and more. Link to full list below.

Every movie and television series made in Wilmington has a story to tell. But sometimes, the stories behind the stories are even better than what winds up on the screen.

"Wrap Beer!", a new podcast hosted by hosted by longtime film workers John D. Kretschmer and Scott Davis, aims to tell the origin stories of the Wilmington film industry, which came to town in the early 1980s. Full story at the link below.
