Historic Melrose High School turned into new library

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A state-of-the-art library held its grand opening in Orange Mound Friday.

Alumni of the old historical Melrose High School came out to celebrate the birth of the Orange Mound Public Library, a project 40 years in the making.

The moment comes after the community is still healing from the Orange Mound Park tragedy where 2 people were killed and several others injured.

Community questions how fatal block party took place without a permit

“It’s very heartbreaking to see our young people losing their lives in such a senseless way and make no mistake about it our team is working very, very hard and we are going to make sure we get those responsible,” Mayor Paul Young said.

In light of the tragedy the beat of the community still goes on, as people toured the new state-of-the-art library fixed with computers, new books, and more.

While the ribbon cutting happened for the now Orange Mound Library, WREG learned that it doesn’t stop there. There is a Genealogy Center and in a few years, according to officials and organizers from Friday’s event, there will be affordable housing for seniors on the second and third floors.

No matter when people graduate from the home of the Golden Wildcats, the legacy stands strong as the community shares there is hope for a brighter future.
