Historic church in Pinckney removes steeple to repair roof

PINCKNEY — The 176-year-old Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pinckney received a bit of a facelift Wednesday.

Following a severe hailstorm last summer that caused significant roof damage, the church temporarily removed its steeple last week so the roof underneath could be re-shingled for repair.

The activity was no small feat — the church’s steeple is 30 feet tall and weighs around two tons, according to Rev. Jacoba Koppert.

The steeple was power-washed and painted while on the ground, before being hoisted back up on the roof. The entire project took only a few hours, Koppert said.

The steeple was installed at Community Congregational United Church of Christ about 38 years ago.

“We definitely had some damage that needed to be taken care of,” Koppert said. “It was good that we could find a solution.”

She credits contractor Jim Purdy, owner of Jim’s Roofing and Construction, with developing the plan to allow for roof repair without damaging the steeple.
