Hillcrest to honor LGBTQA+ leaders on banners, seeking nominations

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Ahead of the 50th anniversary of San Diego’s first “Gay Pride Day” in June, the Hillcrest community plans to honor LGBTQA+ leaders and celebrities by featuring them on banners throughout the neighborhood.

The Hillcrest Business Association and the San Diego LGBTQ Historic Task Force are accepting nominations.

The nominations will be accepted until June 10, according to a release Monday by City Commissioner Nicole M. Ramirez, who is also the chair of the task force. Individuals who are nominated may either be living or deceased.

To submit a nomination, the public is asked to include a bio and letter explaining why they believe the individual should be honored on a banner. Nominations should be emailed to bannersubmissions@hillcrestbia.org or mailed to “Banner Nominations, c/o Hillcrest Business Association,” 1601 University Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103.

Event organizers have announced the theme for this year’s Pride event as “Making History Now.”

The celebration set for July 20-21, along with the parade scheduled for that Saturday, will mark the 50th anniversary of the first Gay Pride Day. It also commemorates the first permitted parade in the city which took place in 1975.
