Hillary Clinton’s Been Rocking the Same Patterned Fleece for More Than 20 Years

Hillary Clinton seems to have been nursing her election loss by shopping at bookstores (and maybe reading escapist novels — might I recommend the Hunger Games?), buying groceries (and possibly cooking comfort food), and taking long walks in the woods near her Chappaqua, N.Y., home. On a recent hike, the former secretary of state was pictured sporting a patterned fleece, a vintage piece that she’s apparently owned since the ’90s.

In response to seeing Clinton’s funky coat, @lookwhoitiz tweeted, “This fleece has more experience than Donald Trump.” While the tweet is clearly in jest, it has exploded across the platform, racking up more than 11,000 retweets and over 30,000 favorites, and garnered a wide range of responses from other users.

The viral tweet features four images of Clinton wearing the jacket over the years — the most recent of her with a supporter she ran into while hiking in Chappaqua, another while sitting with former President Bill Clinton at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming in 1995, and two other images also with her husband. Twitter even created a moment on its platform about the fleece, which the site often does with trending content.

Many users commented on the fact that Hillary has worn the same jacket for at least 21 years, while others joked that Trump has more experience with the word “fleece.” However, many users were also quick to defend the president-elect. “So no longer crooked Hillary it’s now fleece Hillary? Thank God Trump doesn’t have her experience,” one user wrote. Another commented that the fleece “stinks of corruption,” alluding to past scandals Clinton was allegedly involved in. One also replied to the poster of the tweet with, “Let it go. Her experiences have been dreadful for the country that you must not care about.”

While the fleece in question appears to be from Patagonia, its maker is actually unknown. The aforementioned company, which has famously produced a similar style for decades (with wacky designs being especially popular in the ’90s), actually brought back the pullover in loud patterns thanks to a recent resurgence in the fashion industry. Some designers are said to have even incorporated Patagonia-inspired fleece pieces into their latest collections.
