Hillary Clinton would be impeached if she leaked classified information to Russia, says Republican strategist

CNN political commentator Ana Navarro took to Twitter to say that if Hillary Clinton had leaked information to Russia while in the Oval Office, Republican members of Congressional would begin the process to impeach her immediately.

The Washington Post has reported Donald Trump allegedly leaked classified information to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador to the US Sergei Kislyak while the group met in the Oval Office last week.

"If Hillary Clinton leaked classified info to a Russian spook/diplomat, Republicans would rightly be drafting Articles of Impeachment N-O-W," she wrote.

The meeting took place just one day after the firing of FBI Director James Comey, who was leading an investigation into the alleged ties between Russia and Mr Trump's campaign team.

Ms Navarro's outrage at her own party stems from Republicans' consistent and continued criticism of Ms Clinton's purported use of a private email server to send classified emails while she was Secretary of State and on the campaign trail.

She has also been vocal about her opposition to what she feels is Mr Trump's anti-immigrant and racist rhetoric throughout the campaign and his presidency.

There has been a legal debate on whether Mr Trump was allowed to declassify the information he leaked in order to share it with Russian officials, but Ms Navarro mocked the "enablers" for using that as an excuse for Mr Trump being "clueless" or "incompetent".

Another Republican strategist who worked on Senator John McCain's presidential campaign in 2012, Steve Schmidt, echoed Ms Navarro's statements. He said on MSNBC, that Mr Trump's leak of information to Russia in the middle of the FBI, Senate, and House investigations into the country's role in tampering with the US election was a "dereliction of duty" and "shocking".
