Hilfiger plants boardwalk empire on NY pier
NEW YORK (AP) — Tommy Hilfiger was there on the runway at the end of his New York Fashion Week show Monday, but his mind was clearly on the beach.
He filled a hangarlike venue on Manhattan's West Side with sand and built his own boardwalk. It put the crowd in the right frame of mind to see a spring collection full of surf-inspired styles.
"It's really from the inspiration of Melrose to Malibu, and we brought Malibu to New York," Hilfiger said in a backstage interview. "It's about surfing and skating, sporty lifestyles, about color and the modern cool woman."
There were colorblocked neoprene pieces — one of the biggest trends emerging from these seasonal previews — shown alongside denim and olive surplus styles, including a cute romper emblazoned with the model's name as if she were an old-school gas jockey.
Top model Joan Smalls had on a leather basketball jersey (No. 1, of course) paired with denim track pants.
For something a little more refined, Hilfiger offered a salmon-and-sand leather polo dress and a similar silhouette in a Hawaiian print.
