This Hilarious "BBC Dad" Parody Imagines How a Mom Would've Handled the Situation
In case you've somehow avoided all forms of social media in the last week, the viral sensation du jour is the "BBC Dad" video. The 40-second clip seen 'round the world found political scientist Robert E. Kelly being interrupted by his instantly meme-able small children - including everybody's new hero, 4-year-old Marion - in the middle of a live BBC TV interview.
But the life cycle of a viral video is nothing if not predictable. First, there was the BBC Dad backlash. Then, there was the onslaught of interviews with the newly internet-famous family. Now, there's the wave of parody videos - like this minute-long clip that imagines just how a mom would've handled the same situation.
The spoof, produced by the New Zealand comedy show Jono and Ben, puts a woman, Kate Wordsworth, in Prof. Kelly's place. The parody starts off with Wordsworth answering questions about South Korea, then her daughter (wearing the same yellow sweater as Future U.S. President Marion) wanders in. But instead of ignoring her daughter in the hopes that she'll leave/pushing her gently away as Kelly did, the mom in the spoof calmly puts her kid in her lap, giving her milk, all without breaking her stride.
The LOLs come with the increasingly outlandish and absurd hurdles the "BBC Mom" faces. She deals with everything from cooking dinner, steaming her husband's shirt, cleaning a mysteriously floating toilet, and even defusing a bomb for a SWAT team - all without getting up from her chair or taking a break from the interview. The parody ends with the woman's husband bursting in, à la Kelly's wife swooping in to remove the kids in the original video... but it's for her help finding his sock.
Many (particularly moms who know what it's like to juggle full-time parenting with everything short of bomb-defusing) found the comedy sketch hilarious and spot-on. But others were less impressed, seeing the new video as "man-bashing" and stereotyping dads as being unable to juggle everything with such efficiency.
First, this is a joke video and an obvious over-the-top spoof, so of course it's going to be extreme. Second, people on the internet need to chill out. And third, the drastically differing societal expectations for working moms and working dads are still a very real thing, folks.
