Highway 75 construction will slow southbound traffic

TOPEKA (KSNT) — Construction on two southbound bridges on U.S. 75 will start next week and continue until this fall.

Starting Tuesday, May 28, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will close one lane of southbound U.S. 75 for bridge repairs, weather permitting. These projects will include the Westgate Bridge over the Kansas River and the flyover bridge to eastbound I-70, according to a news release from KDOT.

Traffic on this stretch of road will be restricted to one lane for the duration of the project. Current bridge repairs on northbound U.S. 75 will be active at the same time of the southbound bridge repairs. Because of these two projects, KDOT said U.S. 75 is classified as an active work zone from U.S. 24 to I-70.

Topeka receives more than $5 million for road safety

Crews will be working on the project Monday through Friday during daylight hours, as well as Saturdays if needed. All of the on-and-off ramps within the project area are expected to remain open, according to KDOT. Drivers should expect delays during their travels, and consider using alternate routes.

We understand the inconvenience that construction projects cause but these repair projects are necessary. Drivers should plan ahead for delays or use other routes. We urge all drivers to slow down, pay attention, and obey work zone signage.

Kate Craft, KDOT Public Affairs Manager

This bridge repair project is expected to cost almost $3 million. Bettis Asphalt & Construction is the primary contractor and is expected to complete the project by October.
