Highly anticipated bar, restaurant bringing Charleston flair to Columbia nears Main Street opening

A long-awaited new bar and restaurant is getting closer to opening on Columbia’s Main Street.

Prohibition, which operates a popular bar and restaurant in Charleston, plans to open a Columbia location at 1556 Main St. in early April, according to a Thursday news release from the company. The restaurant aims to be “Columbia’s spot for innovative dishes, a cutting edge cocktail program, a curated selection of draft beverages, and live music throughout the week,” the release said.

The space at 1556 Main St. was formerly home to Main Street Public House. Prohibition initially announced plans to come to Columbia’s Main Street more than two years ago when the Public House closed. But with the exception of a seasonal holiday-themed pop-up bar in 2021, the space on a busy downtown corner has remained vacant.

But it now appears Prohibition’s Columbia spot is just about ready to debut.

On the food side, which will be led by Chefs Greg Garrison and Analisa LaPietra, Prohibition said that “guests will find their menus thoughtfully categorized by the primary ingredient and method — vegetables, seafood, meat & poultry, and a fourth section for dishes prepared in the custom pizza oven.” The restaurant’s menu will be updated seasonally to utilize the best local ingredients, the company said.

Meanwhile, the company said bar director Jim McCourt will “spread his genius to Columbia, creating original libations for the Columbia location, as well as pulling some fan favorites from Prohibition Charleston, including a Margarita Picante and a Negroni Diversi.”

The Charleston Prohibition opened on that city’s King Street more than a decade ago and quickly became known for its cocktails and Southern cuisine.

A spokesperson said an exact date for the Columbia opening is coming soon. Once it debuts, Prohibition Columbia will be open for dinner nightly and will have brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
