March 1 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Saturday's National Hockey League games: - - Blackhawks 5, Penguins 1 Chicago captain and center Jonathan Toews scored two goals and goaltender Corey Crawford and the defense around him shone as the Blackhawks easily defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 in the NHL Stadium Series game at Soldier Field. Crawford stopped all but one of Pittsburgh's 32 shots as the game was played in a steady snow, with estimates of up to four inches falling during the contest. The win could prove costly to the Blackhawks, however, as right winger Marian Hossa suffered an upper-body injury late in the first period. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Chicago (36-12-14) while extending Pittsburgh's (40-16-4) own losing streak to three straight. - - Capitals 4, Bruins 2 Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals continued to march into playoff contention with a 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins. Ovechkin scored two power-play goals, the second giving him 800 career points. He has 43 goals this season, eight of which have come in the past 10 games. He also has eight assists in that stretch. Right wingers Joel Ward and Eric Fehr also scored for the Caps in front of goaltender Braden Holtby, who made 36 saves. The Capitals (29-23-9) are in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, a point out of the final playoff position. - - Devils 6, Islanders 1 Jaromir Jagr's 700th career goal began a four-goal second period by the New Jersey Devils as they routed the New York Islanders 6-1. Jagr became the seventh player to score 700 goals in typically impressive fashion when he extended the Devils' lead to 2-0 only 3:31 into the period. Goaltender Martin Brodeur, the NHL's all-time leader wins and games played, made 18 saves in earning his 683rd victory in his 1,249th game. Center Adam Henrique scored in the first period for the Devils, while left winger Ryane Clowe, defenseman Mark Fayne and defenseman Eric Gelinas also scored. Okposo grabbed the only goal for the Islanders. - - Flyers 4, Rangers 2 Right winger Wayne Simmonds scored the tie-breaking goal to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers. Vincent Lecavalier, Sean Couturier and defenseman Luke Schenn also scored for the Flyers, who moved to within one point of the Rangers for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Chris Kreider and center Derick Brassard scored for the Rangers. - - Blue Jackets 6, Panthers 3 Six different Columbus Blue Jackets scored goals as they recorded a 6-3 win over the Florida Panthers. R.J. Umberger, Cam Atkinson and David Savard had power play goals while Artem Anisimov scored the go-ahead short-handed goal late in the second period for the Blue Jackets. Nick Foligno and Matt Calvert scored empty-net goals in the final 1:01 for the Blue Jackets. The Panthers came back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2, but appeared to run out of gas in the third period. - - Jets 3, Predators 1 Goaltender Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves as the Winnipeg Jets won for the 11th time in 15 games under new coach Paul Maurice, defeating the Nashville Predators 3-1. Center Olli Jokinen and left winger Andrew Ladd tallied second-period goals for the Jets, who moved into a tie for the Western Conference's final playoff spot with Dallas and Vancouver on 66 points. Devin Setoguchi scored his 11th goal in the third period. Rookie Simon Moser's tip-in goal at 9:11 of the third period was the only score for the Predators. - - Lightning 4, Stars 2 Tampa Bay Lightning captain Martin St. Louis scored twice in a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars, the second successive game he has scored two goals. Victor Hedman and Ondrej Palat contributed two assists each and goalie Ben Bishop stopped 38 shots to earn his 29th victory for the Lightning. Vernon Fiddler and Antoine Roussel contributed a goal and an assist each for Dallas. - - Kings 2, Hurricanes 1 Alec Martinez's third period goal gave the Los Angeles Kings a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 24 of 25 and recorded his 18th win of the season. - - Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 3 (overtime) Left winger Max Pacioretty scored his second goal of the game on a power-play 3:14 into overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Defenseman P.K. Subban drew Montreal even at 3-3 with a power-play goal 10:52 into the third. - - Flames 2, Oilers 1 (overtime) The 29th-place Edmonton Oilers and 27th-place Calgary Flames turned in a sloppy, mistake-filled effort short on action and offense but at least it ended with some high drama. Center Sean Monahan scored early in overtime to give the Flames (23-30-7) a 2-1 victory. The Oilers (20-34-8) were trailing 1-0 midway through the third period when left winger David Perron ripped a shot into the low corner but the Oilers could not complete the comeback.
