High school students raise thousands for cancer survivor’s Disneyland wish

MIAMI, Okla. — Students at Miami High School are stepping up to help one of their own.

During an all-school assembly at Miami High School, students had a celebration and reveal for a 4th-grade girl battling cancer.

Nearly a year ago – Sydaleigh Gideon had her femur replaced after being diagnosed with a type of bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma.

Her “Make-A-Wish” wish is to go to Disneyland.

Students at the school raised more than $9,000 to help pay for the trip.

“And we are just so grateful for this community and lead by these student leaders who are thinking outside themselves and wanting to do something really special for a child who’s gone through a lot,” said Erin Nantois, Make-A-Wish Oklahoma Director of Philanthropy.

“It means a lot to me, I think it’s really nice that they did this all for me, I really appreciate it and all,” said Sydaleigh Gideon, Make-A-Wish Recipient.

“It was wonderful, it was overwhelming, we could here them in the locker room and they were just celebrating Syd and her fight with cancer and how good she’s done the last year,” said Valeria Gideon, Sydaleigh’s Mom.

“We just had a whole bunch of STUCCO members go around to community businesses, kind of tell them who we’re raising money for and those businesses would hopefully donate the money and we did stuff where it was a package deal so if they raised, if they donated three to five hundred dollars we’re gonna put them on the back of our smile week shirts which are these ones right here,” said Chloe Reavis, M.H.S. Senior.

“They’ve lined up restaurant nights throughout the community, they’ve gone out and asked for money from businesses, asked for different auction items, they did an online silent auction, we’ve been to Rotary this year locally here in Miami and spoken to business owners throughout the community,” said Erin Nantois

Syd’s trip to the happiest place on Earth Florida will take place later this year.

The best news of all, she is now cancer-free.
