High School Principal Replaced After Video Surfaces of Drag Queen Performing at Local Prom

Irene Cisneros, a principal at a New Mexico high school, has been replaced and multiple school employees are on administrative leave after a drag queen made an appearance at the school’s prom.
Channell Segura, Chief of Albuquerque Public Schools, stated in a letter to families that the drag performance took place on April 20, during the event for students of Atrisco Heritage Academy, NBC News and Albuquerque Journal reported.
Per the outlets, Anthony Lovato took over Cisneros' role as acting principal on Wednesday, April 24.
TikTok user e.blackwood shared an image of the letter on their page, as well as videos from the event in question. In the videos, the drag queen — who goes by Mythica Sahreen, according to the Journal and NBC affiliate KOB — can be seen surrounded by a circle of students while performing.
In a post on the high school’s Facebook page, which is no longer available, some users demanded the school to fire those who knew about the performance and allowed it to go on, according to NBC News.
Meanwhile, the performer is upset by the reaction to the video and his performance, according to CBS affiliate KRQE, claiming to have received both death threats and threats against his employer.

In one of the clips shared online, Mythica playfully laid out his rules for the performance, including, “if you see a tit pad fly out, mind your business. We’re grown, mind your business, don’t touch that.”
At one point in the footage, the performer approached a group of students while dancing and removed padding from his outfit. He then patted their face with the pad before blowing a kiss to the students, many of whom can be heard cheering throughout the performance.
Toward the end of the second clip, Mythica appeared to pull a student from the crowd. The two then danced toward the center of the floor before the video cut off.
One student told KOB they felt the performance “wasn’t very appropriate for prom,” while another said it could have been “more PG.” A third student added, “Offended isn’t what most people were, they were kind of just like, 'Why?' ”
Mythica told KOB he works with the school’s Gay–Straight Alliance and was not paid for the performance. He did not state who booked him, but said it went up the proper chain of command.
In the letter to families, Segura and associate superintendent Mark Garcia said school officials are investigating “what occurred and how students were impacted,” according to the Journal.
Segura did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
At least one parent has said they want a refund for their child’s ticket to the event, KRQE reported. It is unclear if the refund was issued.
