High Point named 'All-America City' finalist

Apr. 25—HIGH POINT — The city of High Point is one of 20 finalists for the "All-America City" award that's given annually to 10 communities that apply for the recognition.

The National Civic League, a nonprofit based in Denver, Colorado, will choose the winners in June.

High Point last received All-America City designation from the organization in 1962 and has not applied for the award since 2007.

The theme of this year's awards is "strengthening democracy through local action and innovation," according to the National Civic League.

The awards will "recognize communities that are finding innovative ways to equitably engage community members in activities that strengthen local democracy, like making it easier to vote, engage in community affairs, and serve in leadership roles," the organization says on its website.

High Point leaders decided to apply this year to highlight recent initiatives, including the city's new brand and logo that it uses to market itself to businesses, residents and visitors.

Its bid also touts Thrive High Point, which serves minority and women-owned businesses.

Launched by Business High Point—Chamber of Commerce, the program provides coaching and counseling services for startups and existing companies that may face disadvantages in access to resources, capital, support and training.

The third project the city highlighted in its submission is the work of the Greater High Point Food Alliance, which was established in 2015 to address food insecurity.
