Hickory woman dies in U.S. 64 vehicle accident

Sep. 12—A 76-year-old Hickory woman died Friday in a head-on collision on U.S. 64 in Alexander County.

The N.C. Highway Patrol responded to the scene at about 5:40 p.m. on U.S. 64 near Church Road, said Master Trooper Christopher Casey, with the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Barbara Ruppard Causey, 76, of Hickory, was driving a 2008 Honda Civic west on U.S. 64, crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound 2018 GMC Sierra, Casey said.

After striking the GMC, the Honda Civic overturned into a utility pole, Casey said.

Causey was pronounced dead at the scene, Casey said.

The driver of the Sierra, Robert Lewis Phelps, 42, of Granite Falls, was not injured. A child in the vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The initial investigation does not indicate impairment to be a contributing factor and no charges will be filed in the case, Casey said. All vehicle occupants were wearing their seat belts, he said.

During the investigation, the road was closed off for about three hours.
