Herrmann, Langevin Combine On Three-Hit Shutout of ODU, 3-0

LAFAYETTE – Andrew Herrmann and LP Langevin combined on a three-hit shutout while Louisiana capitalized on an early fifth-inning error to break open a scoreless contest and claim a 3-0 victory over Old Dominion in the first game of a Sun Belt Conference series on Friday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park.

The three-game series – the first-ever meeting between the schools on the diamond – resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.

Herrmann allowed all three hits for Louisiana (14-8, 3-1 SBC) and struck out three batters in 4.2 innings before giving way to Langevin (3-0) after Jake Ticer’s opposite-field single in the fifth put runners on first and second.

Langevin, who earned his second win of the week after fanning seven batters in 2.2 innings in a win over Southern, immediately fanned ODU’s Bryce Jones and set off a stretch of seven straight batters retired before a leadoff walk to Evan Holman in the eighth.

The right-hander, who fanned 10 batters – the most by a Ragin’ Cajun since Carson Fluno fanned 11 at Southern Miss last season – pitched the final 4.1 innings for Louisiana, which posted its third shutout of the season.

The scoreless battle between the Ragin’ Cajuns and Monarchs would be broken up in the bottom half of the inning beginning when Jose Torres reached on a drop fly ball in shallow center field.

Caleb Stelly’s single to right off ODU reliever John Holobetz (2-3) put runners on the corners and after a grounder to third, John Taylor lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Torres for a 1-0 lead. Josh Alexander then followed with an RBI triple to right-center and would score on Kyle DeBarge’s RBI single to left.

Stelly led Louisiana’s eight-hit attack going 2-for-2 with a run scored. DeBarge extended his hit streak to 13 games, tying a career-high, while Taylor’s leadoff single off ODU starter Jay Cassady extended his hit streak to 10.

Duncan Pastore added two hits for the Ragin’ Cajuns while Torres was 1-for-4 after a second-inning single.

Holobetz scattered five hits and three runs – all unearned – in 5.0 innings with five strikeouts for ODU (13-9, 2-2 SBC). Cassady allowed three hits and no runs with four strikeouts for the Monarchs, who were playing in their second road game of the season and first outside the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Carson Fluno (1-0, 3.66 ERA) will earn the start for Louisiana in Saturday’s contest with ODU sending southpaw Dylan Brown (1-1, 3.86 ERA) to the mound.
