Three men helped save a tenant stuck in a burning building in Manhattan on Monday.

The harrowing rescue was caught on video shot from across the street.

A man is seen hanging out of a window. Dark clouds of smoke billow from behind him.

NBC New York reported that witnesses remarked that the man appeared desperate enough to jump.

Fortunately it didn't come to that. Workers from a neighboring apartment stretched a ladder from the fire escape to the window directly below the fire, making a kind of platform.

One (very) brave person then walked across the ladder Indiana Jones-style, stood below the person in peril, and helped the tenant down to the ladder. They then walked backward across the ladder to the fire escape.

The entire rescue is completely riveting and acts as indisputable proof that heroes need not wear costumes.

One of the rescuers, Guardencio Portillo, told CBS New York that he didn't think twice about jumping into action.

CBS New York reported that the tenant was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to recover.
