Hernando superintendent announces retirement, criticizes ‘political games’ in education

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hernando County School District will have to start looking for a new leader soon, as Superintendent John Stratton announced he will retire at the end of the school year, in about a month.

“It has been an honor to serve as superintendent of Hernando County schools,” Stratton said.

The announcement came at the end of Tuesday night’s school board meeting, during a four-and-a-half minute speech by Stratton. In the speech, Stratton said he wanted to pursue other opportunities but also mentioned all the negative politics surrounding schools.

“I have never felt political games had any place in determining how we educate our students,” Stratton said. “I have never understood the time and money spent on politics trying to impact public education and this position, instead of spending time and money on the betterment of our students.”

The announcement comes after Stratton survived calls for his resignation last year when a teacher showed a PG-rated Disney movie depicting a gay teenager, but didn’t get approval from parents.

“Many times, the focus of members of this board have overshadowed the thousands of incredible moments that happen in our schools on a daily basis,” Stratton said. “The focus on the negative has been detrimental to our schools in more ways than one.”

Stratton said he reflected on his career over spring break, and made the decision with the support of his wife and kids.

“For the support I have had from the community,” Stratton went on. “The Hernando County school staff, students and families, I am forever grateful.”

In a statement to 8 On Your Side, school board chair Linda Prescott said politics in schools has been an issue nationwide and most likely will continue, adding, “Mr. Stratton’s announcement was a surprise to Board members and our employees. He has served our District honorably and persevered through tough times.”

Prescott said the process of replacing Stratton will be discussed in upcoming meetings, but the district will continue to move in a positive direction.

8 On Your Side has reached out early Wednesday morning to Superintendent Stratton for clarification on his comments during Tuesday’s meeting.
