Hernando commissioners to decide on millage renewal for November ballot

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hernando Board of County Commissioners is set to vote Tuesday to put the renewal of a millage on the November ballot.

The property taxes raised would help fund the Hernando County School District.

The resolution says the millage would go toward attracting and retaining high-quality teachers and staff with competitive salaries. The school board wrote that other districts with more money are creating a challenging competition for Hernando’s limited pipeline of qualified personnel.

The resolution says the funds from the state and other sources do not give the school board enough resources to help students. The school board said it is aware other Florida school districts have approved an additional millage and seen gains in student results.

The money would also help with school safety measures, increase mental health services, provide students and staff with devices and improve educational opportunities.

According to the school board, the millage would also create a Citizens Volunteer Millage Committee to review annual spending, and all funds collected would stay in Hernando County.

In an email to 8 On Your Side, county commissioner John Allocco said the commissioners are statutorily required to put the millage renewal on the ballot, and the vote on Tuesday is a legal formality.
