Separate entrepreneurs want to build two new liquor stores in Columbia County, each across the street from a convenience store.

Property owner John Capes and applicant Malay Patel have asked the county to build a 12,100-square-foot package shop at 4730 Columbia Rd., where it meets the northern end of South Old Belair Road.

The shop would be accompanied by two 1,500-square-foot spaces for retail or office use, according to the applicants’ submitted description of the project. The liquor store's hours would be 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 12:30-9:30 p.m. Sundays.

The request is to rezone the commercial property to a conditional commercial status that would allow the proposed store. It would be across South Old Belair from a Gas Pro convenience store that opened in 2019.

New rule: Columbia County ups the ante on laws governing new liquor stores

On 4070 Jimmie Dyess Pkwy., property owner T.R. Reddy and applicant Pranav Patel are asking the county to build a 5,000-square-foot liquor store at the road’s intersection with Ridge Point Drive.

Its hours would be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 12:30-7 p.m. Sundays, according to the applicants.

An Exxon convenience store sits across Ridge Point Drive from the proposed new store site. A Goodyear Auto Service shop also borders the site.

The Jimmie Dyess store will be considered by the Columbia County Planning Commission at its next meeting April 18. The planning commission will hear the Columbia Road request May 2.
